The Ballarat Sports and Events Centre (BSEC) is an indoor arena located in Ballarat – the city’s major sporting centre (rebranded in 2022 as Selkirk Stadium). The project forms part of the Eureka Sports Precinct by the City of Ballarat.
The facility features a 3,000 seat show court, including permanent and retractable seating on three sides able to host basketball, netball, or other major sports over the eight-court width. Complementing the courts are the reception and foyer, office and administration areas, a semi-commercial kitchen and café, home and away change rooms and public amenities.
Redesigning the mechanical layout achieved a far greater viewing experience for users of the general courts and, more importantly, the show court. Careful planning and procurement of the Kingspan roofing, retractable seating and sports flooring from international suppliers, were a key to the success of this project.
As with any development of this scale, consideration to essential services and external stakeholders was paramount. Understanding lead times and requirements of stakeholders such as CFA, Powercor and Energy Safe Victoria drove a focus on areas such as the commercial kitchen and static fire firefighting supply, to ensure adequate time for commissioning and certification.
Throughout the construction phase, Nicholson Construction engaged all key project stakeholders, including the end user groups, to ensure a project with such significant community interest was delivered to exceed expectations.
