Nicholson Construction are privileged to have been a part of the conservation works for the 150-year-old Her Majesty’s Theatre on behalf of the City of Ballarat. Construction commenced in February 2023, to improve the capability, accessibility, and safety of the building. These are the most significant works undertaken at Her Majesty’s Theatre Ballarat to date.
Demolition of the existing fire escape and stairs were followed by major underpinning works, with new structural steel beams supporting new concrete floors to accommodate two new lift shafts and modern fire safety rating compliant stairs. Internal refurbishments began with a new bespoke bar area and ticket office, followed by amenities alterations including new inground sewer, new concrete floors, bespoke terrazzo vanities, made to order carpet with integrated border and finishes. Throughout Her Majesty’s Theatre Ballarat, the rich history has been respected to incorporate state-of-the-art amenities for improved accessibility for all.
All services were kept live throughout the project, including fire detection, heating and cooling to ensure the building had full fire protection and optimal temperature control for preservation.
The use of specialist patina brass, lime wash bluestone, salvage brickwork, salvage slate treads, reclaimed painted metal reveals, heritage timber trims, bespoke terrazzo, iron bark stair treads and decking, all preserve the existing finishes and heritage fabric of this iconic piece of Ballarat’s history.
