Nicholson Construction delivered an extensive refurbishment of the council-run aquatic & recreation centre located in Waurn Ponds.
The existing pool was comprised of a concrete base with steel plate walls and finished with a pool liner, where leaking walls required precise and expert remediation. The liner, along with the steel plate, were to be removed and replaced with new in situ concrete walls, with the new walls and existing base fully tiled to finish.
This required the treatment of existing construction joins in the pool base as well as the installation of a full waterproof barrier to the entire pool.
Alongside the refurbishment of the pool structure itself, all pool hydraulic, mechanical and electrical services were removed and replaced to the 50m pool and the internal structural steel repainted.
The works took place while the kids’ pool and smaller warm-water pool remained operational, including the concourse demolition. This required close coordination, and open and constant communication with the City of Greater Geelong and facility management.
The only time the facility had to close operationally was for the rebuilding of the concourse which adjoined the kids pool (Stage 2), where project leadership from the Nicholson Construction Project Manager and Site Manager ensured these works were completed in the allowed timeframe to minimise disruption to the centre’s operations.
